One kitchen.

Mayie met J.B. Maitia, a bartender, and married him in 1947. They had two children, Jenny and Daniel. In 1954, when Mayie was only 25 years old she and J.B. opened their own restaurant, the Wool Growers Cafe on Sumner Street.

Mayie received her ultimate reward watching over the place from beyond Basque heaven.

Her daughter, Jenny and granddaughter Christiane, are still running the restaurant today.

Basque is spoken nowhere else on earth, and cooked nowhere else the same way twice. Etxea — "the house" in Euskara — takes its cue from the pintxo bars of San Sebastián and the cider houses of Gipuzkoa: small plates, grilled fish, salt cod, and txakoli poured from a height.

We make amazing food daily. What doesn't change is where the ingredients come from — the Basque kitchen, in Old Town Kern, and a menu that has fed many people for years.
