Learn more about this sheep...

The Capona is a name given to the male sheep that leads the flock. In many ways Wool Growers is a leader in its community.

The sheep featured in our logo was taken from a 1947 photo. This Capona sheep is the leading sheep of the flock and as such is the most intelligent one in the group. On a particular day, the sheepherder took off his hat and placed it on this sheep’s head. To the surprise and delight of everyone, the sheep kept the hat on all day. And if you find that hard to believe, take a look at the picture that proves it.

Mayie Maitia, the founder of the Wool Growers, is a community leader. Mayie was an inductee to the Basque Hall of Fame.

Join us in 2014 as we celebrate our 60th anniversary!
